Patterns of Invasion is a Southern Roots original historical series examining the events, policies, and powers that shaped European expansion into the Americas.
Through historical documents, royal decrees, eyewitness accounts, and contemporary writings, the series explores how religious authority, political ambition, military conquest, and territorial claims influenced the actions of European kingdoms.
Beginning in the Old World and following these developments across the Atlantic, Patterns of Invasion traces the decisions and events that preceded European encounters with the nations of the American Southeast.
Each episode brings historical sources forward, allowing viewers to examine the records and better understand the forces that reshaped the American South.
About Season 1
The story of European expansion into America did not begin in America.
Season 1 begins in the Iberian Peninsula, where centuries of religious conflict, political consolidation, and military campaigns culminated in the fall of Granada in 1492.
Through the surrender treaty of Granada, the Alhambra Decree, and papal declarations such as Dum Diversas, Romanus Pontifex, and Inter Caetera, the season examines the policies and religious justifications that accompanied the expansion of Spanish and Portuguese authority.
The series also explores the treatment and changing classifications of Jewish and Muslim populations in Iberia, including the experiences of Conversos and Moriscos during the period of religious transformation.
By examining these developments in their historical setting, Season 1 establishes the background for understanding the European powers, institutions, and policies that would later influence exploration, conquest, and colonization in the Americas.
