About the Southern Roots Podcast

History Examined. Sources Brought Forward.

The Southern Roots Podcast takes viewers beyond familiar historical narratives to examine the people, nations, and events that shaped the American South.

Hosted by independent historian and author Jordan A. Simmons, the series draws upon historical documents, early maps, eyewitness accounts, and the writings of past observers to explore Southeastern history through the records left behind.

From the ancient towns and nations of the Southeast to European exploration, colonial expansion, and the changing classifications of its peoples, each episode brings historical sources into the conversation and invites viewers to examine the evidence for themselves.

About Season 1

Season 1 introduces viewers to the peoples, towns, and nations of the American Southeast before following the arrival of European powers and the events that transformed the region.

Beginning with historical descriptions of the Southeastern peoples, the season explores their appearance, languages, settlements, and political organization. It then examines the European world that preceded colonization, including the fall of Granada, the expansion of Spanish authority, and the arrival of Spanish, French, and British expeditions in the Southeast.

Through historical maps, eyewitness accounts, and original writings, the season traces the encounters, conflicts, and colonial developments that shaped the South leading toward the American Revolution.

Each episode builds upon the last, providing historical context and bringing the original sources forward for viewers to examine.
